Eurocodes 3

SDC Verifier implemented a bunch of parts of Eurocode 3 (EN 1993) standard. It is possible to perform beam buckling check according to EN 1993-1-1 (Eurocode 3. Design of steel structures – General rules and rules for buildings, 2005), fire design check according to EN 1993-1-2 (General rules Structural Fire Design, 2005), plate buckling check according to EN 1993-1-5 (General rules – Plated structural elements, 2006), connection check, weld strength check and bolt check according to EN 1993-1-8 (Eurocode 3 Design of Joints, 2005), fatigue check according to EN 1993-1-9 (Eurocode 3 Design of steel structures, Fatigue, 2005).

You can run Beam Buckling Check according to EN 1993-1-1 in SDC Verifier or in specific Eurocode 3 Beam Member App

Chapter 6 “Ultimate limit states” is implemented. Checks are performed for I-beams, Channels, T-beams, Circular and Rectangular tubes, Circular and Rectangular bars. Eurocode3 Member Checks support verification of the sections that belongs to Class 1-3, Class 4 is out of the scope

EN 1993-1-8. Eurocode 3. Design of steel structures. Design of Joints, 2005. Section 4. Welded Connections

Section 4 of the standard EN 1993-1-8:2005 Design of joints is implemented in SDC Verifier for Weld Strength Check according to Eurocode 3.

The provisions in this section apply to weldable structural steels conforming to EN 1993-1-1 and to material thicknesses of 4 mm and over. The provisions also apply to joints in which the mechanical properties of the weld metal are compatible with those of the parent metal. For welds in thinner material reference should be made to EN 1993 part 1.3 and for welds in structural hollow sections in material thicknesses of 2,5 mm and over guidance is section 7 of Eurocode 3 Standard.
For stud welding, reference should be made to EN 1994-1-1

EN 1993-1-9. Eurocode 3. Design of steel structures. Part 1-9. Fatigue, 2005

EN 1993-1-9 provides methods for the evaluation of fatigue resistance of members, connections and joints subjected to fatigue loading.

These techniques are derived from fatigue tests with large scale specimens, that include effects of geometrical and structural imperfections from material production and execution (e.g. the effects of tolerances and residual stresses from welding).

EN 1993-1-8. Eurocode 3. Design of steel structures. Design of Joints, 2005. Section 3. Connections made with bolts, rivets or pins

Eurocode 3 Bolts (EN 1993-1-8, 2005) – Bolt checks according to EN 1993-1-8:2005. Section 3 Connections made with bolts, rivets or pins is implemented.

All bolts, nuts and washers should comply with 1.2.4 Reference Standards: Group 4.
The rules in this Bolt Check are valid for the bolt classes given in Table

EN 1993-1-2. Eurocode 3. Design of steel structures. General rules Structural Fire Design, 2005. Chapter 4. Structural Fire Design

Eurocode 3 Fire Design (EN1993-1-2, 2005) describes the principles, requirements and rules for the structural design of steel buildings exposed to fire. Chapter 4 is implemented. Checks are performed for I-beams, Channels, Circular and Rectangular tubes.

EN 1993-1-2 deals with the design of steel structures for the accidental situation of fire exposure and is intended to be used in conjunction with EN 1993-1-1 and EN 1991-1-2.
EN 1993-1-2 only identifies differences from, or supplements to, normal temperature design. EN 1993-1-2 deals only with passive methods of fire protection.

Chapter 4 of EN 1993-1-2 gives rules for steelwork that can be either:

  • unprotected;
  • insulated by fire protection material;
  • protected by heat screens.

EN 1993-1-5. Eurocode 3. Design of steel structures. Plated structural elements, 2006.

Eurocode 3 Plate Buckling (EN 1993-1-5, 2006) gives design requirements of stiffened and unstiffened plates which are subject to in-plane forces. Plate and Stiffener Buckling Checks are calculated on Sections. With the help of Panel Finder tool, it is possible to automatically recognize Section and Plates with their dimensions.

EN 1993-1-8. Eurocode 3. Design of Joints, 2005. Section 7. Hollow section joints

Eurocode 3 Connections (EN 1993-1-8, 2005) gives design methods for the design of joints subject to predominantly static loading using steel grades S235, S275, S355 and S460. Chapter 7. Hollow section joints is implemented for uniplanar lattice structures composed of square or rectangular hollow sections. Connection Checks are calculated on Connections. With the help of Connection Finder tool, it is possible to automatically recognize Chords and Braces with their dimensions.

List of supported connections:

  • CHS chord and CHS, RHS or I-Beam braces;
  • RHS chord and CHS or RHS braces;
  • I-Beam chord and CHS or RHS braces;

This section gives detailed application rules to determine the static design resistances of uniplanar and
multiplanar joints in lattice structures composed of circular, square or rectangular hollow sections, and
of uniplanar joints in lattice structures composed of combinations of hollow sections with open
sections.

EN 1993-1-8. Eurocode 3. 1D Welds, 2005. Section4. Welded connection

Eurocode 3 Welds 1D (EN1993-1-8, 2005) applies to weldable structural steels conforming to EN 1993-1-1 and to material thickness of 4 mm and over. Also, it applies to joints in which the mechanical properties of the weld metal are compatible with those of the parent metal.

This standard covers checks of welded T, X, and Y Joints with H/I or RHS Brace and RHS Chord.

General info on Eurocode Standards

In the Eurocode series of European standards (EN) related to construction, Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures (abbreviated EN 1993 or, informally, EC 3) describes how to design steel structures using the limit state design philosophy. It was approved by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) on 16 April 2004. Eurocode 3 comprises 20 documents dealing with the different aspects of steel structure design.

Eurocode 3 applies to the design of buildings and civil engineering works in steel. It complies with the principles and requirements for the safety and serviceability of structures, the basis of their design, and verification that are given in EN 1990 – Basis of structural design. It is only concerned with requirements for resistance, serviceability, durability, and fire resistance.

The Eurocodes are the ten European standards (EN; harmonized technical rules) specifying how structural design should be conducted within the European Union (EU). The European Committee for Standardization developed these upon the request of the European Commission.
