Panel Finder

Panel Finder automatically recognizes sections and plates with dimensions which are used in Plate Buckling Checks. This tool can be used with any type of models but especially handy for a model of a ship.

Section - represents frames, longitudinals, decks or custom sections (incline, curved etc.). Each section contains a list of plates. Plate is a set of the plate elements which are surrounded by stiffeners and girders.

To run Panel Finder execute Recognition - Panel Finder - Find... from main menu. Alternatively use Panel Finder context menu:

Default title will be used in name of every new section. Direction and coordinate will be added automatically after the section title.

Press to recognize all the sections and plates automatically including the incline sections. Minimum amount of the elements per section can be defined in Settings.

Sections are divided into 4 types: Sections X, Sections Y, Sections Z and Custom Sections. Section of X, Y or Z type is a set of elements that forms a part of the model along the certain coordinate with the tolerance defined in Settings.

Press to clear the sections of all types (X, Y, Z and Custom).

Press to update missed elements of the plates of all sections, in case when the model mesh was changed and elements do not belong to the same plates anymore.

Sections X, Y and Z controls

Min/max coordinate of the model in certain direction is displayed in square brackets;

- add section by picking a coordinate in Ansys;

- remove selected sections;

- export selected Sections to the components;

- preview only elements of the selected section;

- highlight the selected section elements;

- paste coordinates from clipboard.

- plot all plates of selected sections with labels of ids;

- find all sections by the elements plane of the chosen section type (X, Y or Z).

- find the plates of all selected sections.

To edit the coordinate and the section title manually in the list, double click on the cell.

Sections Custom controls

- add section manually by the selection.

- edit selected section.

- automatically add the sections for selected Ansys named selections from the list;

- perform search of incline sections on selection defined in Settings except elements that belong to sections of X, Y and Z type.

- find plates of all selected sections.

Panel Finder Settings

To open window and set Panel Finder Settings press .

Recognition selection - include/exclude entities where the recognition of sections and plates will be performed;

Section Recognition Settings:

Coordinate deviation limit of section plane - includes the elements that have nodes coordinates deviation from the section coordinate in certain direction;

Note: Option is used for recognition of sections X, Y and Z.

Minimum elements count in a section - the sections with the number of elements less than the defined will be skipped;

Minimum angle between inclined plane normal [0;90] - group elements by planes with a defined angle tolerance between their normal vectors;

Plate Recognition Settings:

Minimum angle between plate edges [0;90] - the minimum angle that is treated as ending of plate edge;

Skip not four edged plates - recognize only plates with four edges (rectangular and quadrangular);

Skip triangular plates only - skip the plates with 3 edges;

Note: It is recommended to perform Sections and Plates searching each time selection or settings are changed.

Panel Finder Plates

Each plate has its properties:

Length - the longest side of the plate;

Width - the longest perpendicular distance to the length vector;

Direction - normalized plate length direction;

Rectangular - shows if the plate is rectangular (Yes) or not rectangular (number of edges will be displayed);

Yield Stress - the property from the material to which the plate elements belongs. If the plate elements belong to several materials than the minimum Yield Stress will be shown;

Thickness - property from property which plate elements belongs to. If plate elements belong to several properties than the minimum thickness will be displayed;

C1, C2 - the coefficients used in calculations of ABS Plate Buckling Check;

Psi X, Psi Y - the coefficients used in calculations of DNV Plate Buckling Check;

- Add custom plate using the selection;

Note: Plate elements must belong to the selected section. Other elements will be skipped.

-update the selected elements;

- highlight the selected plate elements;

- preview only elements of the selected plate;

- remove the selected plates;

- export the selected plates to components;

- combine selected plates to a single plate.

Note: Plates should have at least one common edge of the single element. Otherwise the following error message will be displayed:

- paste data from clipboard.

Note: The amount of plates in clipboard must be equal to the amount of plates in the list. Headers with property names should not be included, otherwise the following error message will be displayed:

Note: Properties "Rectangular" and "Related section" are ignored.

- copy the selected rows to clipboard.

- select nodes to set them as extra borders, split selected plate and calculate dimensions of new plates. The nodes order matters. To form a border, two nodes must be neighbors at the elements they belong to:

- pick elements of new plate. If they do not form connected region they will be split into smaller plates. Other elements of the section will be split in the same way:

- open window for changing the properties of the selected plates:

It is possible to set X, Y, Z or Custom direction.

Panel Finder Plot

Plot types:

Colors Only - plot the selected plates with colors only;

Colors + Labels with plate number of edges - plot the selected plates with colors and create the labels in the center of each plate with the number of edges;

Colors + Labels with plates IDs - plot selected plates with colors and create the labels in the center of each plate with ID;

Colors + Labels with plates dimensions - plot selected plates with colors and create the labels in the center of each plate with the length and the width dimensions;

Length values(no labels) - plot plates length values;

Width values(no labels) - plot plates width values;

Labels with IDs of plates without dimensions - plot plates with not calculated dimensions with colors and create labels with their IDs.

Export plates

- export to excel the detailed information (Section ID, Section Type, Plate ID etc.) of each element of selected sections:

Export Components

All plates as one component - get the elements from all plates of the selected sections and create a component;

Unused elements from the entire model - create the component of the elements from the whole model except the elements of all plates of the selected sections;

Unused elements from all sections - create the component of all elements from all sections except the elements of the selected plates of the selected sections;

Rectangular plates - create the component of the plates of the selected sections that have all four angles 90 +/- 0.01 degrees;

Not rectangular plates - create the component of all plates of the selected sections except the rectangular;

4 edged (not rectangular) - create the component of all plates of selected sections that have 4 edges and are not rectangular;

Not 4 edged plates - create the component of all plates of the selected sections that are not 4 edged;

Plates edges count > than - create the component with the edges count more than defined value;

Plates with edges count = - create the component with the edges count equal to the defined value.

Export to Named Selections

All as one Named Selection - get elements of selected plates and export them into single Ansys named selection;

Export by section - get elements of selected plates section by section and export them into separate Ansys named selections;

Filter

It is possible to filter plates of the selected sections by rules:

Show All - shows all plates;

Undefined dimensions - shows only the plates with not calculated dimensions;

Triangular - shows only the plates with 3 edges;

Rectangular - shows only the plates with 4 edges and all the angles are at the range of 90 +/- 0.01 degrees;

Not rectangular (4 edged) - shows the plates that have 4 edges but not allthe angles have 90 +/- 0.01 degrees;

Number of edges - enables to set the value and shows the plates that have edges count equal to the defined value;

Plates with Free Edges - shows the plates where at least one element in not connected to the other part of the structure and the plates with holes;

Plates with missed nodes / elements - show the plates that have not existing elements or nodes in the model. This appears when the model mesh was changed or the items were renumbered;

Length - shows plates where plate length matches the criteria;

Width - shows plates where plate width matches the criteria;

Criteria for number of edges, length and width:

Note: between and outside require to set two limit values.

Press to apply a filter.

Note: If the selected section is changed the filter will be applied automatically.

To navigate to the plate with known ID fill the ID in the Find by ID field and press .

Plates IDs can be the same for different sections. In this case press to navigate to the next plate with the same ID.
