IACS UR S35 Plate Buckling (2023)

Advanced buckling assessment of ship structural panels per IACS Unified Requirements.

Implemented according to IACS UR S35 – Buckling Strength Assessment of Ship Structural Elements, February 2023 (Corr. 1 Sep. 2024).

About Standard

IACS UR S35 (2023) provides a consistent methodology for assessing buckling strength of plating in ship structures using recognized classification society requirements.

Available in SDC Verifier with full automation of:

  • Section and plate recognition via Panel Finder
  • Stress conversion from FEA element results to plate-oriented directions
  • Buckling safety factor application for individual loads and load sets

Core Features

  • Assessment per Section 3.1 of the standard
  • Material strength checks using yield/tensile values
  • Support for CSR method to derive equivalent plate dimensions
  • Optional manual override for plate thickness input
  • Flexible safety factor and averaging configurations

Stress Averaging & Conversion

  • Element stresses (Sx, Sy, Txy) are automatically translated into the plate X/Y/XY system
  • Option to use plate-averaged stress or element-averaged stress
  • Recognizes triangle and quad elements per orientation rules for stress direction

Plate Geometry Recognition

  • Length = longest edge of the plate
  • Width = longest perpendicular to the length
  • Thickness = taken from element unless manually overridden
  • Includes dimension-based plots and thickness-based filtering

Buckling results are available as:

  • Criteria plots
  • Expanded and extreme value tables
  • Flow tables across load cases

This implementation is especially useful for hull panelstank boundaries, and deck structures, ensuring compliance with IACS and class society requirements (e.g., DNV, ABS, LR, BV).
