Eurocode 3 Weld Strength (EN 1993-1-8, 2005)

Verification of weld integrity based on Section 4 – Welded Connections of EN 1993-1-8:2005.

Perform full-strength weld checks for plated steel structures, including eccentric loading and material compatibility.

About Standard

The Eurocode 3 Weld Strength (EN 1993-1-8, 2005) standard evaluates welded connections in structural steel designs using mechanical compatibility, permissible stress, and throat stress checks.

Implemented in SDC Verifier, this standard includes:

  • Betaw factor calculation (Table 4.1, EN1993-1-8 §4.5.3.2) based on material type.
  • Material resistance factor γM2 = 1.25 for plated structures.
  • Eccentricity option: Adds local bending effects from load misalignment in single fillet welds.
  • Automatic checks including:
    • Geometric parameters (weld area, elastic section modulus),
    • Throat stresses at weld start/end,
    • Base material utilization,
    • Overall utilization ratio based on Von Mises stress.

The checks follow the assumptions and formulas defined in EN 1993-1-8. Weld and base material strengths are assessed using material data (Yield and Ultimate strength) and validated using coordinate-system-based stress calculations. Compatibility between weld and parent metal is a prerequisite, in accordance with the standard.

This implementation supports structural steels ≥ 4 mm in thickness. For thinner materials or specific hollow sections, refer to EN 1993-1-3 or Section 7 of Eurocode 3.
