Eurocode 3 Bolts (EN 1993-1-8, 2005)

Bolt strength and connection checks for structural steel joints.

Assess tension, shear, bearing, and slip resistance of bolted joints per Eurocode 3 Section 3.

About Standard

Eurocode 3 Bolts (EN 1993-1-8, 2005) implements Section 3 of the Eurocode 3 Joints design standard, covering bolts, rivets, and pins in steel structures. This check is fully supported in SDC Verifier and ensures proper structural evaluation under complex loading scenarios.

Key setup and parameters include:

  • Bolt Classes and Material Grades from Table 3.1
  • Hole Type and Diameter, including countersinking and hole tolerances
  • End, Edge, and Spacing Distances (P1, P2) based on Figure 3.1
  • Friction Conditions and Slip Resistance, including γM3 for both ULS and SLS
  • Shear Plane Position – threaded or unthreaded
  • Tensioned Connections, bearing checks, and net area validation
  • Number of Friction Planes and Connection Category (A, B, C) setup

Calculations cover bearing, shear, slip, and combined effects. Safety factors (γM0, γM2, γM3) are automatically applied based on connection type and limit state. The setup allows modeling of standard and preloaded bolts, with material verification through the wizard for completeness.

This implementation allows validation of both simple bolted joints and high-performance preloaded slip-critical connections, directly aligned with Eurocode recommendations and safety margins.
